EDUCATION

Prince Philip started school in France but came to England to attend Cheam Preparatory School in 1928.

He lived partly with his grandmother in Kensington Palace and partly with his uncle, the 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, at the family home of Lynden Manor near Maidenhead.

In 1933, at the age of 12, he moved to Salem school in Baden, south Germany.

In 1934 he returned to attend Gordonstoun School near Elgin in Morayshire (which all three of his sons also attended). The school was founded by Salem's former headmaster, Kurt Hahn, who had been driven out of Germany for falling foul of the Nazis.

At Gordonstoun Prince Philip did well at sports and physical activities, becoming captain of both the hockey team and the cricket team.

He was also a member of the school coastguard unit, a keen oarsman and sailor, and he took part in several sailing expeditions around the coast of Scotland and to Norway. He also became head of the school in his last term.
