On the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the death of Admiral Lord Nelson, I am glad to review a fleet of warships and merchant vessels representing so many nations of the world.
The presence of such a large international fleet is a mark not only of the high esteem in which Nelson, one of the world's most inspirational maritime leaders, continues to be held but also of the special bond that exists between all mariners, of whatever nationality, as they face daily the very testing demands and dangers of service at sea.
The Royal Navy's 'Trafalgar 200' programme is part of SeaBritain 2005 with special events being held to highlight and celebrate our reliance on the sea.
Through exploration and trade our relations with countries around the world were developed and our prosperity was ensured. We pay tribute to seafarers of all nations, past and present, who, often unrecognised, contribute so much to our lives.
Admiral Lord Nelson's supreme qualities of seamanship, leadership with humanity and courage in the face of danger are shared among our maritime community today. He could wish for no greater legacy.
I am delighted that you are able to be part of this historic occasion. |
