  Ben Gorriz
Retail Assistant, Royal Collection Enterprises Ltd
"I get a sense of real satisfaction when I see that somebody has had a really enjoyable visit."

I am a Retail Assistant and have worked for the Royal Household since October 2002.

How did you get your job with the Royal Household?
I responded to an advert in the Evening Standard.

What did you do before joining the Royal Household?
I was a student of design.

Describe a typical day.
After the morning briefing I will prepare my designated shop ready for opening. My day will involve serving and advising customers, attending to deliveries, visual merchandising and cashing up. It is great when the shop is full of tourists and I am surrounded by laughter and many different languages.

I believe that good customer care is providing a service where the customers needs and expectations are fulfilled, and where possible, exceeded. As a Retail Assistant I need to be approachable so that customers can come to me with any problems or questions they may have. I also need to have a sound knowledge of the surrounding areas because sometimes I will be asked for directions.

How would you advise someone looking for a job in this area?
A friendly and helpful disposition are essential for any role dealing with the public. Experience of customer service, especially within a retail environment would be an advantage to applicants and I find it very useful that I speak other languages, as we have so many visitors from all over the world. Generally you have to be enthusiastic, self motivated and be able to get on with people as team work is a vital part of the job.

What training and support are available to you?
We usually receive formal training four times a year in customer service, product knowledge, merchandising and security procedures. Additionally, on-the-job training is continuous and existing team members are encouraged to train the new recruits.

What's it like working for the Royal Household?
It is a great privilege to work in such a prestigious environment, and to work with a great team of people. Visitors have very high expectations and I need to remember that I am representing the Royal household and must provide exceptional service at all times.

What is the best thing about your job?
The aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is being able to meet visitors from all over the world. I get a sense of real satisfaction when I see that somebody has had a really enjoyable visit.
