These designs were made by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) c.1508 for a monumental tomb (which was never completed) for Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, the mercenary leader of the French forces who had seized Milan in 1499; Trivulzio was subsequently appointed governor of the city. The drawing is one of six hundred by Leonardo which were acquired for the Royal Collection in the late seventeenth century
