The prize (above) and commemoration (below) medals for the London Olympic Games in 1908 were designed by the Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal. These bronze replicas of the first dies of the medals were presented to King Edward VII by the British Olympic Council. Although it was anticipated that for each medal the designs on the left would be 'permanent ... for all meetings', this did not prove to be the case
