3 March - The Queen opens the Barbican arts complex in the City of London.

17 April - The Queen signs an act transferring sovereignty of the 1867 Canadian constitution from Britain to Canada on 17 April 1982. The transfer meant that Britain no longer had the right to approve amendments to the Canadian constitution.

28 May - The Pope visits The Queen at Buckingham Palace during his tour of the United Kingdom.

8 June - American President Ronald Reagan joins The Queen for a ride in Windsor Home Park during his State Visit.

21 June - William Arthur Philip Louis, the first child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is born.

9 July - An intruder breaks in to Buckingham Palace, confronting The Queen in her private apartments. The Queen talks to him until police arrive.

16 September - Returning from the Falklands conflict, Prince Andrew is met on board his ship in Portsmouth by The Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne.
