8 February - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh begin a 25,000 mile South East Asian tour to Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, the Maldives, the Seychelles and Mauritius.

5 June - The funeral of The Duke of Windsor takes place at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, before the interment of the Duke in a private ceremony at Frogmore.

28 August - Prince William of Gloucester, the elder brother of the present Duke of Gloucester, dies in an air crash in Staffordshire.

17 October - The Queen arrives in Yugoslavia for the first State visit to a communist country by a British monarch.

20 November - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh celebrate their Silver Wedding anniversary with a ceremony of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, followed by a lunch at the Guildhall.
