Tuesday 4th June started with a State Procession from Buckingham Palace to St Paul's Cathedral for a Thanksgiving Service. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh used the Coronation Gold Coach to proceed to St Paul's.

The Procession was accompanied by over 1,000 musicians playing from two large stages opposite The Queen Victoria Memorial, including the Orchestra of The Royal College of Music, The Bach Choir, and other major choirs, conducted by Sir David Willcocks, The Morriston Orpheus Choir with the Caldicot Male Voice Choir and part of The Golden Jubilee Gospel Choir.

A specially formed Golden Jubilee Steel Orchestra and other Commonwealth musicians also played. They performed "Progress for The Queen", a special arrangement of music and singing from around the United Kingdom and Commonwealth.

When The Queen arrived at Temple Bar, the ancient ceremonies of the City of London were enacted. The Lord Mayor of the City of London offered The Queen the hilt of the Pearl Sword, a ceremony which dates back to 1215. Military and brass bands played to accompany the Gold Coach to St. Paul's Cathedral.

A Service of Thanksgiving took place at St. Paul's Cathedral at 11.30am. Download the Order of Service.

Crowds were able to see the State Procession and Service of Thanksgiving on large television screens in the Royal Parks area and in the City, and hear it on the extensive sound system in The Mall, St. James's Park and Horseguards Parade. During the day, smaller stages in the Parks allowed many entertainers, young and old, to contribute to the day.

After the service at St Paul's, The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh travelled by car to a lunch at The Guildhall hosted by the City. Those invited to the lunch included representatives from The Queen's charities, together with beneficiaries of the Bridge House Estates Trust. Speeches preceded the lunch, made by The Lord Mayor, The Queen and the Prime Minister.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh then returned to Horse Guards where they watched a National Festival of processions down The Mall.

The Mall Pageant commemorated the past fifty years of the Queen's reign, and the cultural diversity achieved both within the UK and across the Commonwealth. It included:

* a carnival theme
* participants from the Armed Services, past, present and future, including winners of gallantry and bravery Awards made during The Queen's reign
* a Gospel Choir of 5,000 Gospel singers
* over 2,500 representatives of The Notting Hill Carnival, brought together under the theme of 'Diversity'
* youth bands and performers from The Chicken Shed Theatre Group
* a Commonwealth procession made up of over 4,000 people from different countries creating living 'artwork', including a Rainbow of Wishes, geometric floats from the Ndbele women of Southern Africa, Bollywood billboard painters and tattooed Kapa Haka dancers, singers and drummers from New Zealand
* commemoration of the Queen's fifty years with key personalities, achievers and stars of the reign walking and on floats, and making use of different vehicles from the last 50 years

The finale of the afternoon was a flypast by the RAF and Concorde as The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. A choir of over 6,000 sang to Her Majesty.
