Queen Victoria distributing the first Victoria Crosses in Hyde Park, 26 June 1857, by George H. Thomas. In 1856 Queen Victoria instituted the Victoria Cross to recognise those men below the rank of officer who had carried out acts of great courage. The first ceremony to distribute the crosses was held in Hyde Park in June 1857.
