In the course of their State Visit to Rome in 1923, King George V and Queen Mary visited most of the city's chief sites. In his diary entry for May 8, the King recorded: 'At 2.30. we visited the Colisseum [sic], the Roman Forum, the Baths of Caracalla & the Catacombs of St. Calixtus, home by 4.30'. Queen Mary's album contains photographs of these sites, captioned in her own hand
