Queen Mary (1867-1953) and King George V both visited Italy - independently - in the 1880s, before their marriage in 1893. This watercolour of the river Arno was painted by the future Queen Mary in 1884, when she was staying with her parents (the Duke and Duchess of Teck) in Florence. The view is from the north side of the Ponte Vecchio, looking down the Arno to the Ponte S. Trinità
