Leonardo da Vinci carried out a number of anatomical dissections in order to gain greater knowledge of the structure and workings of the human body. This drawing (of c.1510) records in considerable detail the anatomy of the shoulder and the bones of the foot, explaining the systems which enable the human arm to be turned, and the mechanism of the shoulder and ankle. The accompanying explanatory notes were written by Leonardo himself, in Italian 'mirror writing'
