At the start of the London Olympic Games in 1948 King George VI sent a message of good wishes to the British competitors, hoping that they would be 'second to none in consideration of our honoured guests' from around the world. The 1948 Games set new records when 59 countries competed. Britain won over fifty medals, including six gold medals, all for sailing or rowing
