Royal Insight

The fourth Olympic Games were opened by King Edward VII in the White City stadium at Shepherd's Bush, London, on 13 July 1908. Eleven days later the Marathon event was run from Windsor to London. This page from the diary of the Princess of Wales (later Queen Mary) records both the start and the finish of the race. The first to complete the race was the Italian runner Dorando Pietri, who was disqualified after being assisted over the line
