Q: Ruth Immanuel - USA
Who will inherit Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's crown?

Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's crown is part of the Crown Jewels; as such, the crown is part of the Royal Collection and is therefore part of the national heritage, and held by The Queen as Sovereign for her successors.

The crown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was created by Garrard for the Queen consort at the coronation in 1937, and is the only crown mounted in platinum. It is set with the remarkable Koh-i-Noor diamond. The crown is on public display, and can be viewed in the Jewel House of the Tower of London along with the other Crown Jewels. For visitor information, see the web site of Historic Royal Palaces.

Q: Mary Ellen - New Jersey, USA
A publication noted that Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince of Wales are left-handed. In recent documentaries on the Royal Family, Queen Elizabeth was filmed writing with her right hand. Please verify this. Also, are Prince Philip, The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, and The Earl of Wessex right-handed or left-handed? Thank you.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, Prince Harry, The Duke of York, The Earl of Wessex and The Princess Royal are right handed. Prince William is left handed.

Q: Peter Milngavie - Birmingham
What has happened to The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award announced last year as a way of marking the Jubilee?

Her Majesty The Queen announced on 30 April 2002 the creation of a new, annual Award to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee. The Award was to recognise the vital role played by the hundreds of thousands of 'unsung heroes' of the voluntary and community world and emphasise the importance of continuing recognition of their work. The Awards are made to groups rather than to individuals.

The first Queen's Golden Jubilee Awards were awarded by The Queen on 2 June 2003 in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. 1400 nominations were received from across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, from which 200 voluntary groups across the United Kingdom were successful.

The second round of awards is now underway, and nominations are welcome at The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award Office. For more information visit the scheme's web site.

Q: Michael Barratt - United Kingdom
I know that the State Opening of Parliament is an occasion when The Queen wears the Imperial State Crown, but are there any other days when this crown or any other items of the regalia are worn?

The Imperial State Crown is worn on only two occasions. In addition to the State Opening of Parliament, it is worn by the monarch for the return to Buckingham Palace following a coronation ceremony. For the rest of the time, the crown and the other items of the regalia are kept in the Jewel House at the Tower of London, on public display.

Other items of the regalia - including the swords, ampulla, armills, orb and sceptre - are used similarly for coronations and some for the State Opening of Parliament also. Some of the regalia are used at other times: for example, at the State Opening of Parliament.

I have heard that The Duke of York is moving from Sunningdale. Is this true?

It has been agreed that, in the coming months, The Duke of York will move from Sunningdale to Royal Lodge, the former home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in Windsor Great Park. Royal Lodge is currently in the process of refurbishment and modernisation, with the costs being met by The Duke of York. As a private home, it is not open to the public.
