6 February - The 25th anniversary of The Queen's Accession is marked privately by The Queen at Sandringham.

10 February - The first of The Queen's Jubilee tours begins, taking in Western Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Australia, followed by a 7,000 mile tour around British regions.

4 May  - The Queen makes a Silver Jubilee address to the Houses of Parliament.

7 June - Jubilee Day is marked by a bonfire chain from Land's End to the Shetlands, a public holiday, and a thanksgiving service in St. Paul's Cathedral. Street parties are held around the kingdom.

14 October - The Queen begins a Silver Jubilee visit to Canada in which she opens the Canadian parliament in English and French.

19 October - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh begin a visit to the West Indies, including the Bahamas and Barbados.

15 November - The Queen becomes a grandmother for the first time, with the birth of Peter Mark Andrew Phillips, Princess Anne's first child.
