31 January - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh set out on a two-month Commonwealth tour of Australasia and the Pacific.

18 February - The Royal party arrives in Australia. The Queen makes her first visit to the Australia outback, where she addresses her subjects over the 'Flying Doctor' network in Alice Springs.

18 October - Lord Home is declared Britain's prime minister by The Queen, acting on the advice of outgoing prime minister Harold Macmillan.

25 November - The Duke of Edinburgh represents The Queen in Washington at the funeral of John Kennedy, the US president assassinated on 22 November.
