25 May - The Queen attends the consecration of the new cathedral in Coventry. The ancient cathedral formerly on the site had been damaged by bombs in the Second World War.

10 July - President Tubman of Liberia is the guest of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh for his State Visit.

18 July - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh pay an informal visit to the East End of London, visiting housing redevelopments in Bethnal Green and Stepney and meeting a local family in their new home.

25 July - The new Queen's Gallery opens at Buckingham Palace.

13 September - The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting takes place in London, and The Queen attends as Head of the Commonwealth.

16 October - The Queen welcomes King Olav V of Norway for a State Visit.

22 November - Prince Philip officially opens the Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia.
