PROCESSION

The Coffin was taken in procession from The Queen's Chapel, St. James's Palace to Westminster Hall on the morning of Friday, 5 April, 2002.

The Processional Route was:-
Marlborough Road
The Mall
Horse Guards Road
Horse Guards Parade
Horse Guards Arch
Whitehall
Parliament Square (East Side)
New Palace Yard (South Side)

The Processional Route was lined by the Armed Forces.

The order of the procession was as follows:

St. James's Palace

By 11.00 a.m. The St. James's Palace Detachment of The Queen's Guard turns out in Friary Court.

Between 11.00 a.m. and 11.10 a.m. The Pall Bearers, the Chief of the Defence Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Representative of the Chief of the General Staff, the Chief of the Air Staff and the General Officer Commanding London District and his Staff, arrive in Ambassadors Court and assemble in the Lower Corridor.

By 11.10 a.m. The Detachments marching in the Procession are formed up in The Mall, Marlborough Road and Cleveland Row.

A Gun Carriage of The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery is positioned in Marlborough Road outside the Entrance to The Queen's Chapel.

11.15 a.m. The Bearer Party of the Irish Guards, having assembled at Marlborough House, enters The Queen's Chapel through the Vestibule Door.

Between 11.10 a.m. and 11.15 a.m. The Gentlemen of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Family, the Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and the Gentlemen Members and personal Staff of Her Majesty's Household walking in the Procession, leave Clarence House and assemble in the Lower Corridor.

11.10 a.m. The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of York, The Earl of Wessex and The Princess Royal depart Buckingham Palace via the Centre Arch and Centre Gate for St James's Palace. The Buckingham Palace Detachment gives a Royal Salute.

Between 11.10 a.m. and 11.15 a.m. The Gentlemen of the Royal Family walking in the Procession and The Princess Royal arrive in Colour Court by way of Stable Yard Road and Ambassador's Court, where they are received by the Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and assemble in the Lower Corridor.

11.15 a.m. The Gentlemen of the Royal Family, the Princess Royal and Gentlemen of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Family are conducted by the Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from the Marlborough Road Door to The Queen's Chapel.

In The Queen's Chapel Prayers are said by the Dean of Her Majesty's Chapels Royal.

The Sub-Dean of Her Majesty's Chapels Royal is present.

11.21 a.m. The Pall Bearers, the Chief of the Defence Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Representative of the Chief of the General Staff, the Chief of the Air Staff, the General Officer Commanding London District and his Staff leave the Lower Corridor by the Marlborough Road Door to take up their positions in the Procession.

11.22 a.m. The Gentlemen Members and personal Staff of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Household leave the Marlborough Road Entrance and take up their positions in the Procession.

11.25 a.m. The Bearer Party carry the Coffin from the Catafalque in The Queen's Chapel to the Gun Carriage in Marlborough Road.

Their Royal Highnesses and those present in The Queen's Chapel follow the Coffin and take their places in the Procession.

11.30 a.m. The Procession leaves for Westminster Hall.

Minute Guns are fired by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery under the command of Major Simon Hall, from Green Park during the course of the Procession.

The St. James's Palace Detachment of The Queen's Guard in Friary Court gives a Royal Salute as the Coffin passes.

The Queen's Life Guard turns out mounted at Horse Guards and gives a Royal Salute.

A Guard of Honour found by Nijmegen Company, Grenadier Guards with the Royal Standard of the Regiment and the Band of the Regiment, under the command of Major Martin David, Grenadier Guards, is formed up in Parliament Square facing the Gates of New Palace Yard and gives a Royal Salute as the Gun Carriage enters New Palace Yard.

Westminster Hall

The route for those assembling at Westminster Hall is by way of Birdcage Walk, Storey's Gate, Broad Sanctuary, Parliament Square (South and East sides) and New Palace Yard.

By 11.05 a.m. The Buckingham Palace Detachment of The Queen's Guard is turned out in the Forecourt to the South of the Centre Gate facing North.

Between 11.15 a.m. and 11.20 a.m. The Lady Grimthorpe and the Lady Members and personal Staff of Her Majesty's Household arrive from Clarence House at the North Door and are conducted inside.

11.20 a.m. The Lord Chamberlain departs from the Privy Purse Door.

Between 11.20 a.m. and 11.25 a.m. Members of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Family arrive from Clarence House at the North Door of Westminster Hall and are conducted to the Grand Committee Room.

11.25 a.m. The Lord Chamberlain arrives outside the North Door of Westminster Hall. 

The Lord Great Chamberlain, the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker take up their positions outside the North Door of Westminster Hall.

The Ladies of the Royal Family having assembled at Buckingham Palace depart from the Grand Entrance for Westminster Hall through the Centre Arch and Centre Gate (The Buckingham Palace Detachment gives a Royal Salute.)  

11.30 a.m. 
The Ladies of the Royal Family arrive outside the North Door, are received by the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker and are conducted to the Grand Committee Room.

By 11.40 a.m.
 Members of the House of Lords are assembled along the West side of Westminster Hall and Members of the House of Commons are assembled along the East side.

11.42 a.m. 
The Queen, accompanied by the Lady Sarah Chatto and attended by the Duchess of Grafton (Mistress of the Robes), the Right Honourable Sir Robin Janvrin (Private Secretary to The Queen) and Major James Duckworth-Chad (Equerry-in-Waiting), leaves the Garden Entrance of Buckingham Palace by car for Westminster Hall through the Centre Gate.

The Buckingham Palace Detachment of The Queen's Guard gives a Royal Salute.

11.45 a.m. 
The Queen and the Lady Sarah Chatto arrive outside the North Door and are received by the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker and inside by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Dean of Westminster. Her Majesty is conducted by the Lord Great Chamberlain to the Grand Committee Room.

11.47 a.m. 
The head of the Procession enters Parliament Square from Whitehall.

All who are marching in the Procession, other than those who are to enter New Palace Yard, continue by way of the East and South sides of Parliament Square to Broad Sanctuary from where they disperse.

11.55 a.m. The Queen and the Ladies of the Royal Family are conducted by the Lord Great Chamberlain from the Grand Committee Room to the North Door and wait outside on the East side.

11.58 a.m. The Gun Carriage halts outside the North Door of Westminster Hall.

The Pall Bearers turn inwards and take up their positions facing the Gun Carriage. The General Officer Commanding London District will have halted facing the North Door.

As soon as the Procession has entered Westminster Hall, the North Door is closed. The Pall Bearers, the Chief of the Defence Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Representative of the Chief of the General Staff, the Chief of the Air Staff and the General Officer Commanding London District and his Staff and the Gun Carriage leave New Palace Yard and the Guard of Honour marches off without music.

The Bearer Party place the Coffin on the Catafalque and take up their positions at the foot of the steps leading up to the West Door.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh take up their positions by the Catafalque. Members of the Royal Family, directed by a Gentlemen Usher to The Queen, stand behind. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Family, directed by a Gentleman Usher to The Queen, take up their position near the Catafalque. Members of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Household and Her Majesty's personal Staff, take up position behind the Family.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, from his position at the South of the Catafalque, says Prayers.

The first Vigil of the Watch, found by 4 Officers of the Household Cavalry, enter Westminster Hall by the West Door and take up their positions on the steps of the Catafalque at the four corners of the Coffin.

The Procession reforms and moves to the North Door where the Dean of Westminster and the Archbishop of Canterbury take leave.

12.15 p.m. (approx) The Lord Great Chamberlain, the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker take leave of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and the Members of the Royal Family at the North Door.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh leave New Palace Yard for Buckingham Palace.

12.20 p.m. (approx) The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrive at Buckingham Palace via the Centre Gate and the Garden Gate.

The Members of the Royal Family and those who have been present in Westminster Hall leave New Palace Yard. Members of the Royal Family returning to Buckingham Palace will arrive by way of the Centre Gate.

The Bearer Party leave Westminster Hall by the West Door.

Members of the House of Lords and Members of the House of Commons leave Westminster Hall.
