The Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh supports The Queen in her daily public duties as well as carrying out his own programme of engagements and meetings.

Prince Philip does not read state papers or the other official documents which The Queen receives from her governments. Neither does he attend The Queen’s audiences with her ministers. The Duke of Edinburgh has no constitutional role other than as a Privy Counsellor.

However, The Duke does accompany The Queen on most of her official visits in the United Kingdom and on all of the Commonwealth and foreign visits.

Prince Philip does not have a typical working day. The Duke is involved with over 800 organisations which means that he spends time working on any number of those organisations each day. His involvement could be either a visit to their premises, chairing a meeting or attending a lunch in support of their cause. On average, Prince Philip carries out over 350 engagements each year.

Prince Philip receives regular correspondence from numerous sources. For example, members of the public, organisations inviting him to attend an event or organisations of which he is patron asking him for a written contribution such as a foreword to a book.

He is also consulted about the running of the Royal Estates.
