TRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent

1. Prince Michael was a page at The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh’s wedding in 1947, when he was five years old.

2. Prince and Princess Michael married in Vienna on 30th July 1978.

3. Since her marriage, Princess Michael has written three historical books: Crowned in a Far Country: Eight Royal Brides, Cupid and the King: Five Royal Paramours, and The Serpent and the Moon: Two Rivals for the Love of a Renaissance King.

4. Prince Michael's English grandfather, King George V was Tsar Nicholas II's first cousin as their mothers, both Danish princesses, were sisters. Their brother was appointed King Georgios I of Greece. Therefore, Prince Michael's Greek grandfather, Prince Nicholas, was also a first cousin of the Tsar. The above makes Prince Michael of Kent a first cousin "twice removed" of Tsar Nicholas II on both sides of his family. The strong family likeness comes through the Danish connection and not the Romanov.

5. In 1998 an honorary doctorate was bestowed on Prince Michael by the old-established Plekhanov Economics Academy in Moscow. In 2002 he was awarded the International Man of the Year Award by the Plekhanov Economics Academy. And in 2003, His Royal Highness was awarded the 'Glory of Russia' by the Plekhanov Economics Academy. Prince Michael was awarded an Honorary Professorship by the Sinergia Economics and Finance Institute, Moscow in 2006.

6. Princess Michael’s father lived in Mozambique, where he became a citrus farmer. The Princess lived on his farm for a while before she was married.

7. The Prince spends over half his time carrying out charitable and public duties and engagements, and the rest on his consultancy.

8. Although they are not categorised formally in the Court Circular, a recent survey showed that in the seven years from 1st September 2000 until the end of August 2007, Prince and Princess Michael carried out well over 200 public engagements on average per annum. The vast majority of these have been linked to the almost 140 various associations, societies, military and charitable organisations to which they both give their support, both nationally and internationally.

9. Prince Michael has made two Television documentary films for Channel 4 : “The Life and Death of the Last Czar” and “Queen Victoria and Prince Albert”. He also gives occasional lectures on Russia and Queen Victoria.

10. Prince Michael took part in the BT Global Challenge in 1996 in one leg of this round the world yacht race, from Wellington, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia.
