Morning Drawing Room

The Morning Drawing Room is one of the finest rooms in the Palace and formed part of the elegant processional route through the King’s Apartments which occupied the south and east sides of the Quadrangle.

This suite of rooms was accessed from the Great Stair and comprised the Guard Chamber, the Presence Chamber, the Privy Chamber, the Ante-Chamber and the Bedchamber.

The route was designed to ensure that access to the royal presence could be strictly controlled and the level of privacy and richness of decoration increased in sequence.

The Morning Drawing Room was originally the Privy Chamber of Charles II.

The room faces east and looks out on to the Palace gardens. When Queen Victoria stayed at Holyroodhouse with her family on her way to Balmoral she used this room in the mornings and so it became known as the Morning Drawing Room.

Today The Queen uses the room to give private audiences. It was here that Her Majesty received Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.
