The Queen and the Commonwealth

Corey Worrell, aged 26, Barbados

When I began to ponder on what a typical day for me is I started to smile. I am far from being described as a typical person, so most of my days are generally not standard. Each day is quite unique for me. I function and serve in many capacities: Regional Youth Caucus International youth leader and motivational speaker, musician, missionary and entrepreneur.

Every morning I rise being grateful for the opportunity to be alive, for the privilege of living in a peaceful and safe environment, for the blessing of having friends and family and for the passion and desire I have for the development of young people.

I resigned from my full-time job as a mathematics teacher to put greater focus on my work as a Regional Youth Caucus. Some days I spend many hours drafting and analyzing youth projects and programs and hosting meetings with youth stakeholders to see these projects move from an idea to a possibility to a definite reality. I work alongside and support many youth groups and organizations both governmental and non-governmental.

Other days I serve in my capacity as a motivational speaker and often work with UNICEF, EDC, Family Heartbeat ministries, churches, youth groups and guidance counselors within the secondary schools in Barbados. I speak to students and teachers as well as parents on topics which include the role of media, the influence of music, teamwork, knowing your identity, leadership, relationships and sex, breaking fear and building self confidence and self esteem.

I have recently started a clothing company, so many days I am on the computer working on designs, talking to graphic designers and screen printers, searching for stock in hopes of producing a competitive product.

I love missionary work, so some days I am at Youth With A Mission serving in youth and children camps as a youth leader or a counselor.

To be associated with wealth is good. For that wealth to be positive, unique, shared and growing is better. It gives me great pleasure to know that I am connected to a people that despite their geographic locations, their political divide, their economic resources, their distinctive cultures and their religious experiences are working towards these common wealths; the wealth of Respect, the wealth of Equality & the wealth of Success.

On attending the CHOGM in Uganda, the Caribbean region joined its brothers and sisters from the other 3 regions to formulate an agenda for youth development. Despite the many hours of debate and disagreement, disbelief and disappointment, we were all able to give respect to different opinions, show equality by allowing everyone to give an input and as a result was successful in completing the task at hand.

Coming from a small but fast developing country and traveling throughout the Commonwealth, I have never once been looked down on or marginalized because of my country's size but at all times I was shown love especially from amongst the Commonwealth young people.
