The Queen and the Commonwealth

Kyan Francis, aged 12, Antigua

In the beautiful island of Antigua, a typical day has a lot in store for many others and myself.

As the sun rises about 5:45 am, the brightness peeks through my bedroom window giving me a great feeling to look forward to the rest of the day. I roll out of bed so that I can get ready for school. I then go to the kitchen to pack my lunch bag and get myself some breakfast. While eating breakfast I would sit in the living room and watch television before I’m off to school.

At 7:30am it’s time for me to be on my way to school. As my father approaches the house I would kiss my mom goodbye and get my book bag and be on my way to school.

While on my way to school, my dad and I would either make jokes with each other or talk about anything that happened. It’s good to feel the fresh breeze and the day already warming up.

When I arrive at school, I have a few minutes to socialize until the bell rings for classes. The school hours are from 8:00am to 3:00pm with two breaks.

When school is finish everyone very excited and ready to go home. At this time the day is sunny and hot and a nice cold bottle of water is good to have with you.

My after school activities start with a good game of tennis or netball until 6:30 pm.

At this time the sun is about to set and the temperature starts to cool down. Most families are on their way home. It’s time to prepare for tomorrow and relax in the comfort of my home. It's now my bedtime which is exactly 9:00 pm and at this time everything is very quiet.
