The Queen and the Commonwealth

The Solomon Islands were discovered by the Spanish in 1568 and became a British protectorate over 300 years later when missionaries and traders arrived to work in and around the sugar plantations in Queensland and Fiji.

The islands were occupied by the Japanese during the Second World War before being recaptured by American forces.

Campaigns for self-government were begun after the war and were eventually successful in 1976. Full independence followed two years later.
