History and present government
The Queen and the Commonwealth

St Christopher became the first British colony in the west Indies in 1623, whilst Nevis was a colony from 1628. Control was disputed by the French during the 17th and 18th was finally ceded to the British in 1783.

St Christopher and Nevis became self-governing in 1967, and then fully independent in 1983.

The Queen is the Head of State of St Christopher and Nevis whilst the islands elect their own Prime Minister, who runs the Government.
