The Queen and the Commonwealth

As Head of the Commonwealth, The Queen regularly visits member countries.

In 1952, as Princess Elizabeth, Her Majesty visited Kenya at the start of a Commonwealth tour on behalf of her father, King George VI. It was at Sagan Lodge, Kiganjo, that she learnt of her accession to the throne on 6 February 1952.

The Queen visits Commonwealth countries as part of her overseas programme of engagements.

Visits to member countries are also made to coincide with attendance at the Commonwealth Games which take place every four years.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh also attend the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the location of which alternates between different member states.

The next CHOGM will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in November 2009.
