Queen and Canada

Karina Bründl, aged 13, Canada

Hello, my name is Karina Bründl and I officially turned thirteen on the third of March. I’m proud to be Canadian, a citizen of a Commonwealth country.

My first year of high school-all the new challenges ahead! I attend classes at Chambly Academy. Some of these courses include; art, English, math, science and technology, physical education, French, ethics, geography and history.

My biggest challenge would be waking up every morning and leaving the warm, cozy, comfort of my bed. I spend most of my time in school - as do most adolescents. Our teachers encourage us to work hard, so I spend the rest of my day in my room on homework. When I find my brain has worked hard enough I go wind down with my book from the thrilling new Twilight saga or my drawing book and pencil.Reading and drawing help me forget all the stressful things from every day life.

On weekends I spoil myself with a mini spa (I do my nails etc.) to help get rid of the buzzing voices in my head; “Don’t forget to do your English paper, p.382 #1-21 in your math textbook, dictée en français (French test), bring in materials for science etc...” I know I’m going overboard but once they have been removed or slightly tuned down (voices) I go and fill my head with fantasies.

I also play elite AA soccer for an inter-city team. It removes my extra energy, and includes bonding time with my father on the trips to the away games and I just love the game. Even if I’m as busy as a bee I still find time to do the things I love (crafts) and focus on school work.

I know the Commonwealth represents fifty-three nations. I’m glad to know that the Commonwealth is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The learning possibilities that await me in the future are numerous. Peace, love, equality, human rights, respect and understanding are important to me.

I’ve already learned about Canada’s financial contributions to the Commonwealth. Many people worry about the economy. I may not understand about the “economic crisis” and I fear the unknown. I know though that Canada will commit to maintaining its role in the Commonwealth.

I have a lot to learn about my role in the future. Books, internet and people are all tools that help me understand this subject. Knowing that there are people/organizations helping to make our world a better place, I feel relief and I hope that I can do my part.
