THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IS ISSUED BY THE PRESS SECRETARY TO THE QUEEN

The Olympic Torch Relay will travel through the grounds of four Royal Residences on its way to the Stadium for the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games on Friday, 27th July.

The Queen will view the Olympic Flame at Windsor Castle on 10th July, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will see the Torch carried by three Torchbearers at Buckingham Palace on 26th July.

The Torch will also travel through the Balmoral Estate in Scotland and the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. There will be no members of the Royal Family present during either time.

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will officially open the Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium on Friday, 27th July.

Notes to Editors:

1. The dates when the Olympic Flame will pass through Royal Residences are:

  • 11 June: Balmoral Estate
  • 4 July: Sandringham Estate
  • 10 July: Windsor Castle, where The Queen will meet Torchbearers.
  • 26 July: Buckingham Palace, where The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will be present.

2. Other Members of the Royal Family will “meet” the Torch as it travels around the Country. Details of those events will be announced in due course.

3. The Queen opened the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. The Duke of Edinburgh (on behalf of The Queen) opened the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.The Prince of Wales opened the 1984 Paralympic Games at Stoke Mandeville.

King George VI opened the 1948 London Olympic Games at Wembley Stadium. King Edward VII opened the 1908 London Olympic Games at the White City Stadium.
