Service to commemorate the passing of the World War One Generation, 11 November 2009

On 11 November 2009, The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will attend a Service to commemorate the passing of the World War One Generation in Westminster Abbey.

The Duchess of Gloucester, as Patron of the World War One Veterans Association, will also attend the Service.

Remembrance 2009

On 8 November 2009, The Queen will lead the nation in remembering the war dead during the annual ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

Through this annual event, the nation pays homage to those who died in two world wars and in many other conflicts from the twentieth century to the present. Her Majesty, other members of the Royal Family and leaders of the country's political parties will join representatives of the Armed Forces and ex-servicemen and women for the two-minute silence and the last post.

The Queen will then lay a wreath of poppies at the foot of the Cenotaph, followed by members of the Royal Family, representatives of the political parties and High Commissioners from the Commonwealth. A short religious service will follow. After the reveille and the national anthem, Her Majesty will depart.

The war veterans will then march past the Cenotaph to pay their respects to the fallen.

Members of the Royal Family will also attend the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 7 November 2009.
